SMART University

SMART University, was founded in 1998 in East Harlem to provide treatment, health and prevention education for women living with and affected by HIV/AIDS in a safe and supportive environment. Classes run for 24 weeks and are divided into 8-week trimesters (Fall, Winter, Spring) on topics that focus on women as a whole—mind, body and spirit.
SMART University offers women living with and affected by HIV/AIDS:
– a safe, supportive place to explore and increase their self-esteem
– a better understanding of treatment options
– the tools to become informed participants in their treatment decision-making process
– help in facilitating an increased sense of personal empowerment so they can be advocates for themselves, their peers and communities
Who is eligible for SMART University?
SMART University welcomes women living with or affected by HIV/AIDS who are:
– interested in getting control of their lives
– willing to listen and be heard
– interested in learning how to better their health in order to live longer, healthier lives
– want to share valuable information with other people living with HIV/AIDS.

SMART A-B-C Programs

Students enrolled in SMART University are eligible for our A-B-C Programs:
SMART Art explores various art mediums and projects that incorporate relaxation and stress-reducing skills that are key to keeping up a healthy immune system. Field trips are designed to complement and inspire the women as they tap into their creativity for their in-class studio project.
SMART Body (The Gerald J. and Dorothy Friedman SMART Body Nutrition Program) is a hands-on cooking class where women learn safe, healthy and delicious food preparation skills that are taught by a registered dietician. Each class covers an important nutritional topic that is relevant for HIV+ women.
SMART Computer teaches women basic computer skills that are necessary in this technology age. Beginners learn how to create an email address, develop internet search skills while advanced students hone their computer skills as they work on Power Point presentations and learn to use other advanced software.
SMART Prevention and Outreach
SMART Prevention and Outreach is a SMART program that provides prevention education and related information in collaboration with other community-based organizations to prevent transmission of HIV and sexually transmitted diseases, especially in communities of color.

SMART Youth
SMART Youth was launched in 2005 as a program dedicated to youth (ages 13-22) living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. SMART Youth’s goal is to create a supportive social environment where youth can feel safe and learn independent living skills. For more information, visit www.smartyouthnyc.org.
